Hannah – A Model for Christian Moms
1 Samuel 1 – 2:11
– Although Hannah’s story is found in the book of 1 Samuel, she lived during the time of the Judges and gave birth to the final Judge of Israel – a righteous and faithful priest named Samuel
– This morning we will examine together the story of one of the greatest and most godly women in the Bible who is a model for future generations of moms
I. Hannah’s Pain (vv. 1-8)
1) A Bigamous Marriage
2) A Barren Womb
3) A Belligerent Rival
Application: Hannah experienced the same kind of problems and pain that Christian women continue to experience today. The Christian life is not a problem-free life, but we can be sure that God is sovereign over all of the trials we experience.
II. Hannah’s Prayer (vv. 9-19)
1) A Broken-hearted Prayer
2) A Selfless Prayer
3) An Earnest Prayer
4) A Faith-filled Prayer
Application: Hannah’s close relationship with the Lord shines brightly against the dark backdrop of Israel during the period of the Judges. Moms – make sure that prayer is a top priority in your life that a lifestyle of worship is being modelled regularly before your family.
III. God’s Provision (vv. 20-28)
1) God’s work within Hannah’s body
2) God’s work on Hannah’s husband
3) God’s provision for Israel’s need
4) God’s preparation of Samuel
Application: Hannah realized that our children do not just belong to us – they belong to God!
– “Hannah is a reminder that mothers are the makers of men and the architects of the next generation.” – John MacArthur
IV. Hannah’s Praise (2:1-11)
1) Gratitude for God’s provision
2) Praise for God’s character
3) Submission to God’s sovereignty
Application: Hannah’s son and Hannah’s song of praise anticipate the story and song of another woman named Mary who would give birth to an even greater Son – Jesus Christ! (cf. Luke 1:46-55)
