Put Sin To Death

Colossians 3:5

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature.”   – Colossians 3:5

– Sin: Not a popular subject, but an important one.

– Sin: What matters
our opinion? or God’s Word?

– Sin: Anything which is contrary to the holy character of God.

Faith in the substitutionary death of Jesus on the cross allows us to have our sins forgiven.

If sin’s dominion is broken (Romans 6) why do Christians still sin?

1 Samuel 15

– God’s command to Saul concerning the Amalekites (vs. 3)

– Saul disobeys God’s command (vs. 8-9)

– God rejects Saul as king (vs. 23)

Advice from God’s Word on how we can put sin to death

– Be careful with our mouth, our eyes, our feet (Proverbs 4:24-27)

– We are sinning against a holy God (Genesis 39:9)

– Sin has consequences (Proverbs 6:27)

– Pray for a holy hatred of sin (Matthew 6:13)

– Put to death the deeds of the body (Matthew 5:30)

– Abstain from sinful desires (1 Peter 2:11)

– Meditate on God’s Word (Joshua 1:8)

– Be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18)

Before we can put sin to death in our lives, we need to realize our sinfulness, and our need for forgiveness, put our trust in the finished work of Jesus, and make Him Lord of our lives.

As Christians, we need to be putting sin to death in our lives.
