Living in the Last Days
Acts 2:14-36
Introduction
1. Peter’s use of the Old Testament gives us significant insight into how we should interpret God’s Word
- We must always interpret the Old Testament in light of the New Testament and its fulfillment in Christ
- “Christians read the Bible backward” – Alistair Begg
2. Peter’s explanation of Pentecost reveals three great truths:
1. The ‘Last Days’ are here! (vv. 14-21)
1. We have been living in the ‘Last Days’ for the past 2000 years
- This phrase is frequently used by well meaning Christians in an unbiblical way (v. 17; cf. Hebrews 1:1)
- The “last days” were foretold by all of the Prophets
2. Pentecost and the “Day of the Lord”
- Peter quotes a passage from Joel 2:28-32 which describes the “Day of the Lord”
- The pouring out of the Spirit on “all flesh” was fulfilled at Pentecost
- “Wonders in the heavens” occurred at the crucifixion, at the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD (Josephus), and will occur again prior to the return of Christ
- Prophecy, dreams and visions are a characteristic of the present age of the Spirit
- Day of the Lord was seen as a single event by the Prophets, but turned out to be a number of events which have occurred in history and are yet to occur
- The Day of the Lord signifies vindication for God’s people, and terrible judgment for God’s enemies
2. Jesus is Risen (vv. 22-31)
1. If the “Day of the Lord” has arrived, so too has the Messiah!
- Miracles of Pentecost are related to the miracles of Jesus
- Peter’s shocking words: “You crucified the Messiah!”
2. Psalm 16 provides compelling evidence for the Resurrection
- David cannot be speaking here about himself, since he died and went to the grave (Sheol/ Hades)
- This Psalm is therefore speaking about the Messiah!
3. Jesus is King (vv. 32-36)
1. Pentecost here on earth signified a Coronation in heaven
2. Psalm 110 provides conclusive evidence that Jesus is King
- Who is the “my lord” in v. 34?
- David, the greatest king in Israel, points to another King who is infinitely greater than himself
3. God’s Testimony about His beloved Son
- He is Lord
- He is Christ (Christ = Messiah)
